Why Data Science Club?

Hello everybody!

I'm Gina lead instructor and researcher @byteflows_datascience_club. I want you to know more about me. I have a Ph.D. in Physics, and my main focus on research has been Quantum Optics, Quantum Informations, and Atomic Physics. I became a member and instructor of the club because I love teaching and sharing knowledge. I learn a lot when I have the chance of teaching, by listening student’s and colleagues' questions and discussing with them our points of view. During 2020 and 2021 things were extremely hard for a lot of people, including me, personal and professional issues appeared when you least expected them, and that is why we created the club.

We became aware of how difficult the situation was and how everything would change forever. Connection and empathy became our primary goals. We know a lot of people who lost their jobs, or simply became depressed because of the lockdown and isolation. We started with ourselves, we began having discussions about new and old projects we had in the drawer. We began hunting for new jobs at different places, and mostly we shared our experiences. During the job applications, some of our friends found that some questions asked during the interviews were tricky because they have lost the basics. We focused on our friends and prepared training sessions, with the basics, Probability and Statistics, Machine Learning, and R. These sessions were amazing, we discussed, we shared and most importantly, we re-discovered how important the basics are. Some found new and better jobs, excelled in the interviews, and started to work on new projects with us. We believe during these difficult times, our meetings meant something, not just professionally but personally. We supported each other and we believe we came out of all the mess better than when we started. The club idea became a reality. We knew it was not going to be easy, but we were and are excited about what can be accomplished.

We invite everyone to join, for a single class or an entire month, we know we are different. It is not only a simple class that you can take online or read about, it is more than that. It is about community, it is about you and me. In one of our meetings planning the club the term that describes what we are looking for is professional wellness. We want to be great at our jobs, and get the money, or advance in our careers, but, do you know how to be happy while you get those and after you get them?
